Book Review: Jungle Warfare, devotional

Jungle Warfare: A Basic Field Manual for Christians in Sales, by Christoper A. Cunningham.

2.5/5 stars

I’ve never been a big fan of devotional books. I usually find them cloying or condescending or both. The little tidbits of Scripture and the feel-good, read-it-in-a-minute daily messages leave me wanting something more. Something like a deeper message, or a look into more than two verses at a time. However, I get that devotional books with these short reads are good for folks who are busy, who don’t have time for in-depth Bible study, or who maybe want a kickstart into their own Bible reading or prayer time.

Jungle Warfare is a focused devotional book, specifically written for Christian in sales. I find the topic and approach refreshing, even though the typical devotion-a-day and tidbit of Scripture still irritates me. But I think that’s just me. As far as content goes, each day’s reading is divided into a key concept (an excerpt from a real “Basic Field Manual”), a Scripture selection, a Battle Plan (the message for the day), a prayer, and then a short directed journaling section with space for answers in the book.

As someone who prefers inductive Bible study, the format isn’t my cup of tea and strikes me as shallow. However, for busy, on-the-go sales people who want to get a vital Scriptural concept that is relevant to what their day holds, this is a good choice. It’s a small enough book to keep in a briefcase or glove compartment; it contains the Scripture and the journaling space in the book, so you don’t have to carry a separate Bible and notebook. And it provides a focused way for working Christians to keep God at the front and center of all their life and work.
