Modern Homemaking REdefined: Question of the Day #1

Do you feel like your home is an accurate representation of YOU, the person? Does it fit like your favorite pair of jeans, make you feel pretty like your black heels? Or is it more like that ugly, scratchy sweater your Mom made you wear over Christmas in 5th grade?

Put in your 2 cents!

  1. I think our home overall is a good reflection of us as a family, and the room that fits me personally is my office. It’s in the office that I get to use my favorite colors and line the walls with my book collection. I love it, which is good, since I spend a good chunk of time there.

  2. The home I have is an accurate description of my family – overbooked, overstuffed, always on the run. Our poor house doesn’t get much attention because we’re always at sports games (and I’m never really home anymore). My room reflects my bright and cheery personality: the walls are bright yellow, my comforter is hot pink, sheets are lime and my shelf is orange. I have a valance with all those colors in stripes.

Now, when I move out in a few months, everything will be warm, calm, and (hopefully!) inviting, with the colors being black, chocolate brown, and deep red with a dark stone fountain in the corner. Warm, modern, and comfortable. That would be an accurate description of the kind of home I need when I move.

  3. Uh, no. Only being here about two years in which I had a baby and started a business my house in a work in progress. Wait, maybe then it does represent me : )

I don’t think there is one room that is fully “done” and it mocks me making me feel guilty for the lack of completion. What is done reflects our style though. Classic, comfortable and sophisticated.

  4. My home definitely reflects me. I am constantly re-inventing myself, or should I say, following where my inclinations lead me. Therefore, my home is a changing environment. Friends and family walk in the door and say, “You changed something!” Yes, I did. I moved the bookcase over to the other wall, or got rid of all my plants, or decided to get rid of all the knick knacks cluttering the living room. And sometimes when family or friends come over to visit, they arrive while I am in the middle of renovating the contents of all my cupboards. And they get to see everything stacked up all over the kitchen. That’s me, constantly rearranging me, and my life.

  5. Awesome responses! Thanks for joining in!
@Leslie Ann: I love my office too! This is the first home (our 3rd) that has actually had the space for me to have an office instead of a corner. Mine is painted scarlet red & bookcases lining two walls.
@Amanda: you are bright and cheery! I love your idea for decorating your own place. Don’t lose all those colors though. Surprise people with a hot pink bathroom or something. :)
@Katie: that’s about how I feel about our place. Home decor is kind of bottom-of-the-list, and most of our “stuff” is hand-me-down so not necessarily “my style.” we’ll get there, just slow going…
@Elizabeth: right on! I love change and variety. My husband is always teasing me about rearranging furniture and moving random stuff, and I go on purging binges frequently. It feels good to clear and makes things fresh and different.

  6. To me, the thing that is most important in creating your home is that it doesn’t stay stagnant. Even if the “bones” of your house (like that favorite sofa, dining table, etc) stay the same, don’t let the composition of the furniture or the arrangement of accessories and organizing systems stay the same for the next 20 years.

I saw a quote one time (can’t remember the source!) on home decorating and I think its true: “The inside of a home is like a reflection of you as a person. It should constantly be changing.”

Change is good, and change is healthy! So even if its dragging out a piece of crystal to set a candle scape on it, then go for it. Change it up!

  7. Annie, I do feel that my home is a representation of me infused with my husband’s :) I was just thinking about how my home decor reflects the colors and design of my clothes (not too similar but they have common themes). I’d love to work on it some more but I think I would wait until I have a bigger space.

  8. My house is on the market, it is no longer a “home” and I remain in limbo….I am not a “show” home so it is uncomfortable having everything picked up, put away, personal pics packed away, etc. It’s just not ME @ this point in time. And with most of our belongings going into to storage in NC and my two sons staying in MO it’s an emotional roller coaster for me right now. Just my two cents ;-)

  9. Well, “my home” is pretty much a room right now. But yeah, I think it does reflect me, in both good and bad ways. My decor is trying hard to be peaceful and warm. Its mostly together, but never totally organized and theres always areas that need help. It seems to fall apart more and more as life gets more stressful and busy.
