Drinking coffee I didn’t make…

Oh yeah.

mmmmmmmmmmm

Tuesday. 6:30 a.m. I’m sitting at Bread Co in Eureka, drinking coffee I didn’t make, eating a chocolate pastry (of this variety), checking email, writing… The wi-fi is zipping along and I just got a response from a good blogging job possibility. I made the top 15 out of 120 applicants, have a few questions to answer… and the pay is a decent $20/post. I’ve been pondering the whole freelance writing rates discussion. If you’re talking about a magazine article or the like, then a measly $.05/word (which would be what I’d make for a 400~ word post) is low, low, low.

But online jobs have changed freelance writing, and I think we need to change our perception of “a good rate” along with it. A blog post is an entirely different animal than a queried, outlined, researched, written, submitted, edited, re-submitted magazine article. Depending on how well I know my topic, I can produce a good blog post in 20 to 30 minutes, an hour for topics I don’t know so well. At $20/per, that’s a decent hourly rate, even if I’m working at a slower pace.

Freelance discussion over.

It’s lovely being out right now. Joe’s off today, and he is at home with the three kids who are (I hope) all still sleeping. They were when I left. I take no responsibility once I’m out the door… heh. We kept them up late last night, though, watching some inane safari-animal movie and then the surprisingly funny “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel. I’m not a big Carrey fan, but I got the movie because it has Deschanel in it. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch. (Note: one scene is not, eh, graphic visually but the context is clear and inappropriate. )

Movie recommendation over.

I’m going to do a little job hunting, reading, typing, website work, and a little more coffee sipping.

Can I get a booth like this at home? Right beside a chocolate-pastry machine? I’ll make the coffee myself; I don’t mind.
