Drinking coffee I didn’t make…

Oh yeah.

mmmmmmmmmmm

Tuesday. 6:30 a.m. I'm sitting at Bread Co in Eureka, drinking coffee I didn't make, eating a chocolate pastry (of this variety), checking email, writing... The wi-fi is zipping along and I just got a response from a good blogging job possibility. I made the top 15 out of 120 applicants, have a few questions to answer... and the pay is a decent $20/post. I've been pondering the whole freelance writing rates discussion. If you're talking about a magazine article or the like, then a measly $.05/word (which would be what I'd make for a 400~ word post) is low, low, low.

But online jobs have changed freelance writing, and I think we need to change our perception of "a good rate" along with it. A blog post is an entirely different animal than a queried, outlined, researched, written, submitted, edited, re-submitted magazine article. Depending on how well I know my topic, I can produce a good blog post in 20 to 30 minutes, an hour for topics I don't know so well. At $20/per, that's a decent hourly rate, even if I'm working at a slower pace.

Freelance discussion over.

It's lovely being out right now. Joe's off today, and he is at home with the three kids who are (I hope) all still sleeping. They were when I left. I take no responsibility once I'm out the door... heh. We kept them up late last night, though, watching some inane safari-animal movie and then the surprisingly funny "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel. I'm not a big Carrey fan, but I got the movie because it has Deschanel in it. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch. (Note: one scene is not, eh, graphic visually but the context is clear and inappropriate. )

Movie recommendation over.

I'm going to do a little job hunting, reading, typing, website work, and a little more coffee sipping.

Can I get a booth like this at home? Right beside a chocolate-pastry machine? I'll make the coffee myself; I don't mind.

  • Freedom to Focus Is Freedom to Accomplish
Focus is key in getting things done. Be diligent at what you're good at and see what happens. Let other things go, unimportant things. Distraction is the enemy of focus. Planning becomes procrastination and procrastination is the enemy of action. What distracts us? Distraction #1: Prep Work Before I can write or exercise or go here or fix that, [...] […]
  • Parenting 101: The Greatest Joy
It is 8:30 on a Saturday night and I am about to gorge myself on good chocolate and books. I am full of resolution. I am full of cheer. I am alone with the hot running water, in a cocoon the color of the shower curtain. My library loot is stacked beside me on the [...] […]
  • {Book Review} Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God by Sheila Walsh
Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God by Sheila Walsh Thomas Nelson Publishers; 3 out of 5 stars I like this book, I do, so I feel kind of guilty being harsh in my review. But repetition bores me, and the writing in this book is very formulaic. Each chapter follows the same format: personal story [...] […]
  • The Story of Us
The story of our marriage begins back in the 1990s. Okay, actually further back than that, in the 1980s, when a very young Joe had a crush on the little red-headed neighbor girl, and a very young Annie, miles away, decided she wanted to marry a brown-eyed Italian boy when she grew up. Then they met. They were [...] […]
