How to Do Difficult Things, Part 1

Personal Growth Add comments

Most worthwhile things are difficult at first. I wasn't born a professional; no one is, whether their chosen field be basketball, business management, or motherhood. Most of the time, I achieve a level of mediocrity in what I do and stay there, satisfied to be average or a little above.

Some people, though, just refuse to settle down. They're always pushing limits, breaking records, making more money, succeeding at a level I've not dreamed of for myself. Then they publish an autobiography or memoir and I run to the book store to buy it.

I want to be like them. I want to be better. I want to do more. I want to overcome. But it's so difficult. That kind of success means pain. It means losing sleep, getting sore muscles, asking awkward questions and facing down the answers. That kind of success requires me to get up early, stay up late, work, think, feel, and push myself like I never have before. It hurts. It's uncomfortable. I'd rather watch a movie.
